David Jolicoeur, also known under the stage name Trugoy the Dove and Dave, was an American rapper, producer, and one-third of the hip-hop group De La Soul.

David Jolicoeur biography

Jolicoeur was born to Haitian-American parents on September 21, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York, but was raised in the Long Island hamlet of East Massapequa.

In the 1980s, Jolicoeur, Vincent Mason, and Kelvin Mercer were close friends who went to the same high school in the Amityville neighbourhood of Long Island following their decision to start a rap group.

Critics and journalists referred to the group’s members as “the hippies of hip hop” due to their outlandish sense of style and the upbeat lyrics of their self-titled debut album (a title that the group was quick to refute with the release of the second album De La Soul Is Dead in 1991).

About De La Soul group

The American hip hop group De La Soul was founded in 1988 in the Amityville neighbourhood of Long Island, New York.

They have made significant contributions to the development of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres and are most recognized for their varied sampling and peculiar lyrics.

In high school, Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo created the group, which producer Prince Paul became interested in after hearing a demo tape of the song “Plug Tunin’”. The band’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, has been dubbed “a hip-hop classic” for its fun wordplay, creative sampling, and clever skits.
