Dramatic footage shows two people crawling along the top of New York City's Williamsburg Bridge as police hunt for a suspect stuck 140 feet above the East River.

The incident on Friday morning caused a shutdown of the busy stretch as cops worked to try and bring the individual down.

Video shows stunned onlookers watching as two people can be seen inching precariously along the edge of the bridge.

The standoff eventually came to an end after several hours with the suspect safely brought down and taken into custody.

The bridge was reopened to the public after 10am, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed.

He posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, which said: 'Update: the NYPD has taken a suspect into custody and the Williamsburg Bridge is now open in both directions.'

The shutdown sparked travel chaos with trains and traffic in both directions grinding to a halt.

Travel has since resumed but the public is still being warned to expect, 'residual delays' in the area by the city's emergency notification system.

NYCT Subway released a statement with advice to travelers which said: 'J/M trains are running with severe delays in both directions.

'The last stop on some 57 St-bound M trains will be Myrtle Av to provide Metropolitan Ave-bound service. NYPD has completed their investigation on the Williamsburg Bridge.'

A heavy police presence remains in the area, with reports of helicopters flying overhead.

Pictures also show traffic backed up at the entry to the bridge, which connects Lower East Side of Manhattan at Delancey Street with the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The incident comes just a month after NYPD were filmed in a dramatic rescue of a man threatening to jump from the same spot.

Bodycam footage showed the nail-biting moment a cop scaled the bridge in pouring rain to reach a distraught man threatening to jump.

The rescue took place just after 5pm on September 24 in the wake of Storm Ophelia.

In 2018, the NYPD received a similar call out and almost and hour and a half talking a man down from the bridge.

While last week, harrowing footage emerged of two police officers attempting to coax a man down off the FDR underpass.

Cops Carl Fayette and Eleodoro Mata were praised as heroes for saving the civilian's life.
