The Indianapolis lacrosse scene is grieving the sudden death of beloved Carmel High School head coach Jack Meachum, who passed away Tuesday night in a fatal car accident. He was 31 years old.
According to police, Meachum was driving eastbound on Indiana 38 near Sheridan when his Chevrolet Trailblazer was struck head-on by a GMC Sierra crossing the center line. The other driver, 26-year-old Brennan Smith, also died from injuries sustained in the devastating collision.
Meachum had just led the Carmel Greyhounds boys’ team to a state championship title in June 2023, cementing his status as one of Indiana’s top lacrosse coaches. But beyond the accolades, he was cherished for his inspirational mentoring of young student-athletes.
“Coach Meachum pushed us to be better players but also better people. His legacy will live on through everyone he coached,” said Carmel senior Matt Jones. Others praised Meachum’s emphasis on perseverance, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Tributes have flooded social media from heartbroken players, peers and the wider lacrosse community. “Words can’t describe this loss. Jack was a true mentor and friend who impacted so many lives,” said Zionsville head coach Chris Price. The accident came far too soon for a dedicated coach with much left to give.
As we process this tragedy, let’s honor Jack Meachum’s spirit by carrying forward his passion for lacrosse and nurturing the potential in every athlete. The young lives he shaped will ensure his lasting impact. Our thoughts go out to his grieving family members, players and all who knew this inspirational coach.
