John Cena is a 16-time World Champion and carried the company to the best of his abilities for over a decade. He was the face of the company and Cena worked very hard to maintain his top position as well. In fact, even JBL had a lot to say about young John Cena.
On the other hand, JBL is a veteran in the pro wrestling world, having started his journey during the Attitude Era in the late 90s. Bradshaw had a storied career, winning multiple championships along the way. He also has quite few interesting stories to tell.
Many consider John Cena defeating JBL at WrestleMania 21 for the WWE Championship to be the moment John Cena became the face of the company. While speaking during an episode of Table for 3 with JBL, Booker T, and Rey Mysterio, JBL revealed what he told Vince McMahon when John Cena was still young.
“You know Cena from day one, you know, it’s a different match going from eight minutes to 30 minutes. Thirty minutes is tough. You gotta take your own role and some people can’t ever make that transition. I think he may have done longer matches with Kurt Angle first, who’s one of the greatest of all time, but if not, then I was the second guy to take Cena for 30 minutes. He was comfortable from day one.
I remember Vince asking me, he goes, ‘how is he?’ I said, ‘that kid is freaking awesome.’ I mean he’s that good. And he was from the get-go. He got into deep water and a lot of people just drowned.”
JBL truly helped put John Cena over in a huge way in their title matches and Cena will forever be grateful to JBL for all he has done for him in the end. We will have to wait and see when Cena will make his return to WWE television.
