Marshall L. Meadors III, M.D., was a respected physician and community leader in Anderson, South Carolina. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He died on July 17, 2023, in a possible drowning accident on Lake Hartwell. He was 65 years old.
Early Life and Education
Meadors was born on June 6, 1958, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was the son of Marshall L. Meadors Jr., a bishop of the United Methodist Church, and Hannah Campbell Meadors, a homemaker. He had three siblings: Jane, James and John.
He attended Wofford College, where he graduated with honors in biology in 1980. He then went to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he earned his M.D. degree in 1984. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Greenville Hospital System in 1987.
Career and Achievements
Meadors joined Primary Care Associates, PC, in Anderson in 1987. He was board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. He was also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Geriatrics Society.
He served as the chief of staff and the chairman of the department of medicine at AnMed Health Medical Center. He was also a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.
He was involved in many professional and civic organizations, such as the South Carolina Medical Association, the Anderson County Medical Society, the Rotary Club of Anderson, the United Way of Anderson County and the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce.
He received several awards and honors for his service and excellence, such as the Physician of the Year Award from AnMed Health Medical Center in 2012, the Humanitarian Award from the Rotary Club of Anderson in 2015 and the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Henry McMaster in 2019.
Personal Life, Wife and Family
Meadors married Jennifer Smith Meadors in 1982. They had four children: Weatherly, James Jr., Jack and Blakely. They also had eight grandchildren: Marshall IV, Henry, Vivianne, Benjamin, James III, Hayes, Wilder and Gus.
Meadors enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved traveling, fishing, golfing and reading. He was an active member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his paternal grandparents: Marshall L. Meadors Sr., a former mayor of Florence, South Carolina, and Sarah Lucius Meadors.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, maternal grandparents: John Campbell and Jane Campbell; his aunt: Sarah M. Stokes; his uncle: John Campbell Jr.; his niece: Sarah L. Stokes; his nephews: Parker Cromley, John Meadors Jr., Perry Meadors; his cousins: Mary C. Tibbetts, Hannah Cromley; and many other relatives and friends.
Marshall Meadors Obituary Anderson SC, Cause of Death and Funeral Arrangements
Meadors died on July 17, 2023, while swimming on Lake Hartwell near his home. According to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, he may have been electrocuted by exposed wires on an electrical box that provided power to the dock where he was swimming. He was found on the bottom of the lake in about 8 to 10 feet of water and had been missing for about 30 minutes before he was found. He was taken to AnMed Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The coroner’s office said that an autopsy is scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
A memorial service will be held on July 21, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Anderson. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. A private burial will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.
